Continuity: Galactic foreigners, frantically trying to understand where and what we are.

We awake as galactic foreigners, frantically trying to understand where and what we are. We have all had the experience of waking up in bed and not remembering where we are. That is our perplexing predicament as observers of continuity in form. Waking with that feeling of not knowing where you are, instantly puts you into a pattern of seeking prior events that have lead to where you lay at that moment. This is the story of human history.

Biology is a scaffolding for the universe to experience time. Atomic matter structured to complete entropy creates a continuity of complexity. We are neither complexity nor entropy, but the continuity between the two.

As I write this, I am the result of 34 years and trillions upon trillions of cellular replications. This process is programmed for an average of 50 more years. I am no more the person I was than the person I will be. I observe the flow of time between these cell replications. I have a personality, patterned from prior experiences and malleable by future ones. The understanding that I am the continuity of a biological process that gives rise to conscious experience, quells the ambiguity of subjective existence.

If one were to look at the history of their own life with a time-lapse camera that could record every cell division, chemical reaction, and neurotransmission, what in that recording could be isolated and labeled a person? Where does the emotion felt in the cinema exist when the movie plays? The continuity of light and still frames flowing through a projector creates an experience of recorded consciousness. A person is neither the projector nor the projected, but the continuity of experience illuminated on the screen. This is to say, a person is neither the body nor the mind, but the continuity of experience that happens through both.
