Pegasus3 R4 External Hardware Raid Enclosure

This is my review of the Promise Technology Pegasus3 R4 external hardware RAID enclosure with 4 drives with a total capacity of 16 TB.

I ordered this online directly from the Promise Store. It was shipped the next day and it arrived the day following that. The boxed product was shipped inside of two well-padded plain boxes!

It is plug and play with Apple's Macs. Connect the power cord and then the Thunderbolt 3 cable to your Mac and you're ready to go. You don't have to touch it after this. It is controlled by your Mac.

The Thunderbolt 3 cable that is included is only 1 meter (a little over 3 feet) long. I had to buy a 2 meter cable (expensive) because I wanted to place this underneath my desk. Although the drives and the fan are relatively quiet, you probably don't want this device sitting on your desk next to your computer.

The device comes with 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports so you can daisy chain another Thunderbolt 3 device including another 5K monitor.

Have I said that it is fast! The Thunderbolt 3 interface and the hardware RAID are responsible for this speed. I transferred over 4 TB via my Gigabit network to the Pegasus without a single problem.

It comes configured to run RAID 5 and this is what I wanted. Therefore, only 12 TB total is available although total capacity is 16 TB. With RAID 5, you lose the capacity of 1 drive in exchange for peace of mind.

You won't lose data if one drive fails. The drives are hot-pluggable so you can remove the defective drive and replace it with a new one without shutting down your system and stop working with it.

I've updated the firmware after installing the Promise Utility (needed). I also installed the ChronoSync software (license included), although I haven't used it yet.

Best of all, I am now totally free of Microsoft's Windows! The Pegasus3 R4 replaces 2 Windows 7 computers which I was using as file servers. I've noticed that my study is not as warm as before. My study looks so much cleaner without all the cables, monitors, and computers.

Even my wife has noticed. And that is good!

I am very happy with the Pegasus3 R4. I'm also using it as a Time Machine to back up my iMac.
