Every year The christian right declares that there is an ever ongoing "War On Christmas". The Main Stream Media laughs at them and belittles them. Despite my Anti-Theism I sympathize with the people "fighting" for Christmas. For what still remains to be the majority of my time on Earth I WAS a christian. What many christians are afraid to admit (even to themselves) is that being a christian is not only hard it just plain SUCKS. In my sad, difficult over burdened life Christmas still remains one of my precious few good memories Christmas is the one good thing you get out of being a christian. A key component of Christmas is it's virtual omnipresence. To truly get into the Christmas spirit and get all of the joyous warm sentimental feelings that come with it It needs to feel like Christmas' is everywhere. Think of some of Christmas' defining traits and key iconography Think of the things that only appear in Christmas songs. "Sing the *Ancient* Yule Tide Carol" "Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" the use of archaic language "Twas the Night before Christmas" You keep it in your way and let me keep it in mine"
In actuality Christmas is not nor has it ever been ancient. It only goes as far back as the middle ages. Despite the truth of the matter Christmas's supposed agelessness is a key part of Christmas's identity as a holiday. It's brand if you will. In the final month of the Gregorian Calendar Christmas is (supposed to be) omnipresent and the Holiday Season closes out with the "Happy New Year" as if this divine celebration were a part of inner workings of Time Itself.
These qualifications can not be met if Christmas decoration, songs and other assorted ephemera can't be everywhere in everyone's face the entire month of December. Despite what some might say Hypersensitivity has basically ruined Christmas. That being said it is still hypocritical for these self righteous right wing Christians to expect the government to fix this for them. They're always moaning about how government is supposedly to big and powerful and how the glorious private sector will solve everything. Conservatives are always so willing to drop their supposed hatred of big government whenever it's convenient for them.
Ironically this is probably the worst time for them to abandon their Free Market rhetoric. This issue is perhaps the one thing in the whole world that the private sector can help them with. The 1st Amendment prevents the government from helping them promote Christmas or help them get into the Christmas spirit but you know who can help them, BUSINESS and HOMEOWNERS. If they want to bring Christmas back to the way it was in the 80's and 90's all they have to do is get businesses to bust out the Christmas Trees, pimp out the Santa's Grottos, Crank up the Christmas Music, Cover the building in Christmas lights bust out the tinsel cannons and go to town.
The most important thing for conservative Christians to "fight" in "The War On Christmas" is to remember the battle starts at home. Ban together with your christian neighbors and make your neighborhood the next Christmas lights travel destination, put the collection plate around a few extra times in November to fund the churches Christmas decorations. Use your blind devotion to American Super Capitalism to save Christmas.
