“Two generations ago,” Nahaeda began, “There was a man named Naehus. The son of Zaenias, he was a high-level Inersien who involved himself with research.”

“Zherosha citizens were beginning to reach beyond their solar system. Naehus discovered something that made him believe that he was on the same level of the creator.”

“Using this discovery, they found a distant planet. The Inersien leader wanted to try to trade with the inhabitants. Naehus thought it would be better to take control of the planet. After all, the inhabitants of the planet were so primitive that they think that the Inersiens were gods.”

“But to be a god is to be against the creator, isn't it?” Amnika asked. Realizing she interrupted she meekly said, "Oh, sorry.”

Nahaeda laughed, “You would be right, little one. No one is on the same level of the creator. If you allow others to worship you are insinuating that you are. It eventually prevents you from connecting and if you don't connect to others…” Nahaeda paused, waiting for Amnika to finish.

Amnika caught on right away, “You become unreformable.”

Nahaeda grunted his affirmation.

“That's precisely what happened to Naehus,” He continued the story, “He no longer connected with the other Inersiens. He no longer had empathy and only wanted his way. The leader tried to stop him, but couldn't. Naehus was a strong Inersien.”

“Finally, he challenged the leader. Naehus was stronger than the leader and his supporters, and he had no use for tradition. Even after the leader rescinded, Naehus killed him. Then he began to kill all the leader's supporters who would not agree with him.”

“Some Inersiens went to the tribes for help. Because City matters were not important to the tribes, they would not get involved.”

“Gaelia and Josias had a young son…”

“Zakkon!” Amnika stopped herself from saying more and pulled her hood over her head and face out of embarrassment.

Nahaeda laughed again and lifted her hood high enough to see her face.

“It's okay, little one,” He said, “you can contribute.”

“He's the leader of the Inersiens,” Rhada said.

“Yes, Rhada,” Nahaeda said, “and his mother had to convince my father to keep him in the caves. Father didn't like the idea, but Gaelia was persistent, so he relented. Since the Tribal Natisiens didn't get involved with the city, Naehus didn't bother to check the caves for the son of one of his rivals. Josias finally joined his son after Naehus killed his wife.”

“Zakkon and his father stayed with my family. We shared a sleeping area. Zakkon and I became close friends, and Josias became friends with my father. Josias warned my father that Naehus would not stop with just the Inersiens, especially if the Citizen Natisiens decide to leave the city. My father refused to listen.”

“Years passed, and Zakkon becomes of age. I also become of age, and we would work together to hunt. It was about this time we discovered that Inersiens were helpful in attracting scants.”

Nahaeda chuckled. “Zakkon learned to trust us, and we learned to trust him.”

“The Citizen Natisiens were not happy, and they started to leave the city to join the tribes. Soon no work was getting done. The city started to decay. Naehus was angry and would try to force the Natisiens to stay. When that wouldn't work, he went to the caves.”

“Naehus was the strongest Inersien alive. Many Natisiens died trying to stop him. Many Inersiens died trying to help the Natisiens. Father and Josias decide to work together to rid of Naehus.”

“One thing Naehus could do is open a portal,” Nahaeda said.

Amnika's eyes opened wide. “A Portal to where?”

Nahaeda shook his head. “No one knows. Josias challenged him to do it. We aren't sure if Naehus knew how to open a portal, or he learned on the spot. Naehus was one who couldn't be given a level.”

“Josias challenged him to open a portal and Naehus did. My father, who was hiding behind some boulders, ran and picked up Naehus and threw him into the portal. When he realized what was going on, Naehus gave my father a large energy burst. Then he pulled Josias into the portal with him.”

“My father died that day. In his death, a new tradition was born.” Nahaeda said. His voice was low.

Hearing the waver in his voice, Amnika looked up at Nahaeda and leaned on him. She knew she would be sad too if her father died.

Nahaeda looked down at her and grunted. “It was a long time ago.” He shifted uneasily.

“Josias, Zakkon and I worked on a plan for any Inersien showing potential. Rhada is the second generation to practice this tradition. You, Amnika, will have a full protectorate. That Protectorate will be Rhada.”

Amnika sat up looked at Rhada sitting on Nahaeda's other knee. He smiled at her turning his eyes into slits.

Other Natisiens started to tell a few antidotal stories about their parents or relatives dealing with Naehus.

They talked for a long time until Amnika stretched and yawned.

“Well then, little one,” Nahaeda said gently. “You need rest. Your father should be here soon.” Amnika looked at Rhada who fell asleep. His mother picked him up, and Nahaeda picked Amnika up. Then they took them to the caves.
