If you have been paying any attention to the Internet or college campuses you'll know that trans, non-binary and numerous other alphabet-related issues have been a big thing in the US for quite some time. The trend has been trying to establish itself in Europe but the response has been somewhat lame. They keep trying though.
This time in Finland it's the union of high school students. Yep, we have one. In my time the people who showed any interest toward such a thing were the crazy ultra-progressive types typically from an leftist activist family or then the yuppie types eager to get a head start into center right political parties. No more than a percent or two of the student body in any case. I have no reason to believe things have changed drastically. This piece of news reinforces that idea.
The high school students union is concerned that the teachers are not enough aware of gender sensitive issues and that these issues should be coverer more extensively in teacher training. They say that the high school study material gender expressions are very cis normative. The president of the union Pietu Heiskanen ( I would assume he uses he/him pronouns but can't be sure ) educates the public that we can no longer assume that girls would like to nurture and boys enjoy sports.
The union is especially worried about sports. 40 % of trans youths and 48 % of the sexual minority youths had feared to feel excluded at sports, tells Aino Anttila ( possibly using she/her pronouns ) - president of the social politics division of the high school students union. Anttila stresses the importance of adults recognizing the variety of genders while the youth is forming his/hers identity. The news paper then educates us about what is cis gender and they use the wording that comes directly from the SJWs: a person that feels that his/hers gender identity matches the gender assigned at birth. I think my grandmother might have to read this article a few times to make any sense out of it - and give up after a few rounds.
Just a few thoughts about the article. The union obviously has way too much money if they can maintain a division of social politics. They - as their rabid counterparts in America - seem to hold the multitude of genders as a holy grail. The union leadership - a bunch of 17-year-olds - have taken it as their mission to educate adults about gender.
More over they are demanding that the teachers should be more aware of these issues. Now the teachers in Finland tend to be extremely progressive. The teacher training surely is. The union is also very concerned about sports but fails to connect sports to teacher training or high school studies in general. I believe they just wanted to make a point about how progressive they are and this is what you get for spending too much time on tumbler.
So the SJWs are here too. And make no more sense than their American idols. Perhaps less. A bunch of demands of nothing concrete and a whole lot of rhetoric. I'm sure in 2020's where going to become more familiar with these names as they'll enter national politics - these people always do.
* In Finland we call politicians with no actual working experience nor any credibility political broilers - this is what these two people are surely aiming to be. Hence the banner image.
