Shall we Wait for an Explosion or Should we do Something to Prevent the First one?
The probability of terrorism has risen in Finland. Hundreds of lone wolves and risky individuals are knows by the security police and the real number is way higher. (
It is frustrating that the officials and the politicians have not taken a single concrete step to tighten the grip on islamists and other dangerous immigrants. What are they waiting for? It would be important to handle the issue now and not after the first explosion. Unfortunately we often only hear the soft statements where experts are demanding more money on integrating the islamists and to support them. It is unfortunate that if a politician demands tighter policies against islamists he/she gets labeled racist. This conflict shuns the debate and is harms the security of Finland.
It is sad that the EU has not done anything to control its external borders not to improve the immigration policies. This now threatens the unity of the Union. Could Finland became a leader on this issue? Strongly radicalized individuals should be kept under tight surveillance or expelled if they are not citizens. Almost all people who have committed terrorist acts have been known to the police. The question is when is the police going to be given the power to do something about it instead of waiting for the terrorist to commit a crime.
While waiting for officials and politicians to act the risk of terrorism has increased.
One of the reasons for the increase is that ISIS is losing the war in the Middle East. American backed troops are taking over the last urban stronghold of ISIS in Syria. Today there has been a lot of speculation over the death of the leader of ISIS al-Bagdadi. ( Syrian and Iraqi media announced this already last week though ). ISIS has been having lots of trouble for a long time though. It has become more difficult for ISIS to recruit new fighters because Turkey has closed its Syrian border. Before the foreign fighter entered Syria through Turkey. This and the attacks by the international coalition have weakened ISIS to a mere shadow of what it used to be. Now ISIS is recommending islamists to stay where they are and act locally by the best of their abilities. Many members of the diaspora see this as a recommendation to strike against the host country.
General security in the west is threatened only by radicalized islamists but also by a small but thight ultra-nationalistic diaspora. These are individuals whi maintain a close relationship with the dictators of their home countries. The tentacles of many Middle-Eastern rulers reach the diaspora in Europe. As we have seen during the past years, if they don’t like something about the international politics, these rulers threaten to incite their diaspora against the host country. All though the majority of the people from the Middle-East have fled the despotic governments of their home countries there are also activists who admire them and who are very loyal to the dictators. They are a threat to the national security of the host country.
2015 when Turkeys borders were leaking and masses of people arrived to Europe from the Middle East many islamists and other dangerous individuals came along them. It is extremely difficult if not impossible to identify the potential terrorists. It is also not easy to distinguish between a terrorist between a “terrorist” and an “opposition fighter”, because the issue is disputed. The shia Muslims might call someone a terrorist but the Sunni states might view them a worthy freedom fighter and vice versa.
To prevent an attack in Finland I recommend that the following should be focused on.
How to stop a terrorist attack in Finland?
Disastrous wars orchestrated by the west that we have seen during last years in Libya, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan etc. cause the local people to desire revenge. Instead we should favor peaceful processes that support democracy in the region.
In addition to that I recommend that in Europe the surveillance of both asylum seekers and Islamic groups that operate here should be tighter. All people with links to terrorism should be deported immediately and the local mosques should be tightly monitored. Teaching religion at school should be reconsidered and redesigned. I personally would ban religious symbols – such as the veil at school.
In Finland the islamists (not Muslims, islamists ) have been given to much room by accepting their demands and right to special treatment. A small and radical group causes trouble to the moderate Muslims by trying to control their doings and widening the divide between the native population and the Muslims.
It would also be important to investigate thoroughly everyone who travels to terrorist hot beads. People returning from war zones in Somalia, Libya, Iraq and Syria are not to be supported and guided back to the society but kept under very thigh surveillance. They should not be free to move around and communicate freely before establishing that they have not participated in military operations or in supporting those. Legislation should also be changed so that a resident permit or citizenship could be revoked from people who have participated in terrorism who are suspected of it. They are ticking time bombs who are not to be allowed out of custody.
The ambassador of Bahrain speculated yesterday that Qatar was behind the Manchester bombing. Recently during the crisis between Qatar, Saudi-Arabia and Iran high officials of these countries have accused each other of supporting terrorism. Also Erdogan blamed Gülen of terrorism although they had been working side by side for decades to achieve common goals. What does that tell us? It tells us that the Middle-Eastern countries know how their neighbors operate and supporting terrorism is a business as usual.
Moderate Muslims are the first victims of Islamic extremism. In addition to being forced to flee from their homes they are also the majority of the victims of Islamic terrorism. Therefore it is unfair to lump them in with the perpetrators.
ISIS is based on political Islam. I believe that the Islamic leaders have a duty to modernize the religion. I expect the Finnish authorities to take concrete action to improve the security.
