The deadliest bird in the world keeps entering peoples' homes. Here's why.

The cassowary is one of the largest, flightless birds on the planet.  It's talons are razor sharp, with the ability to rip a human's gut open if provoked; fortunately they're not violent by nature.

Recently, there has been a large upsurge in the number of cassowary sightings across Australia.  Since a category 5 cyclone devastated the coast of Queensland in 2011, they've come out of their forested habitat looking for food in droves.  They're even coming into peoples' houses.

“It is always preferable to leave a cassowary in its home range,” the EHP said. “But in this instance the proximity to homes meant the risk of future attacks was considered unacceptably high," according to a statement from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) after removing a bird from a resident's home.

The crazy part is that humans may be mostly to blame for the emergence of the bird.  A study published in the Journal of Zoology found that of the 150 known cassowary attacks on humans, 73 percent of them were motivated by the expectation of being fed.

Don't feed the birds.

“It's vital that members of the public don't feed cassowaries—for their own safety and in the interests of the birds’ survival long term,” Kate Jones, Queensland’s sustainability minister, told The Telegraph. “Cassowaries that come to expect food from humans can become aggressive and dangerous.”

Though residents continue to send love to these birds (they are well loved (and even named) within the communities), it's no laughing matter if one comes desperate, into your house.  The Australian government continues to warn people not to feed them; it may seem like you're helping them, but you're actually making them dependent and potentially aggressive.

As one person put it, I think the people that see themselves as ‘custodians’ of the cassowary are one of the biggest problems… killing them with kindness so to speak.
