Avoid these 10 potentially dangerous foods from China; they could be toxic, or worse... PLASTIC

Oddly, food shipped into the United States from China is often cheaper than food grown domestically due to bizarre trade deals and regulations (or lack thereof).  Chinese food regulation is well known to require much less of the food suppliers in terms of health and safety.  The 10 foods that follow are ones you should actively avoid eating if they come from China.  If you don't know where they came from, it's probably safest to avoid them.

Here are 10 foods you should avoid if they came from China

 

1. Tilapia Fish

Because of the high levels of water pollution throughout China, this bottom feeding fish bears the brunt of the toxicity that flows through the lakes and rivers.  80% of tilapia in America comes from China and the heaviest metals and toxins fall to the bottom, where these fish will eat almost anything.  It is also not known what the fish are being fed.  This study actually suggests that eating tilapia is more dangerous than eating bacon, a known carcinogen.

2. Cod Fish

50% of American Cod comes from China but because of water pollution and lack of feeding regulations it is a huge gamble to consume it.

3. Apple Juice

Did you know roughly 50% of all apple juice sold in the US comes from China?  Chinese farmers have been known to use harmful pesticides on their food and sometimes use them, despite bans from government.  This is one food you will want to purchase organic or grow yourself.

4. Processed Mushrooms

It is calculated that 34% of all processed mushrooms come from China. It is often untold what they are grown in and what is used to feed them.  When buying mushrooms, go local or stick with a company you trust.

5. Chinese Garlic

31% of garlic sold in America comes from China and like with other grown foods, the pesticides involved in the process can be extremely unhealthy (specifically methyl bromide).  64,876 tons of dried, fresh, or chilled garlic, were imported from China in 2014.  You can find out how to spot Chinese garlic here.

6. Chicken

Despite the outbreaks in avian flu found in China, the US Department of Agriculture continues to approve the sale of chickens from China since authorizing it in 2013.  The same pollution and feeding issues persist with chickens as they do with fish.  If you don't know what your chicken was being fed, don't eat it.

7. Plastic Rice

Frightening reports of Chinese companies producing fake, plastic rice hasn't stopped the import of unregulated amounts of the stuff.  When cooked, this particular substance stays hard and may actually be made from potato and resin.  This vile produce is one that should be strictly avoided; if you want rice, eat organic rice!

8. Black Pepper Mud

A vendor in China was caught selling mud as black pepper. Although this may just be a one-off, it's difficult to tell and there is little oversight as to who's making what.  In order to guarantee the quality of your black pepper, make sure to research a trusted source.

9. Industrial Salt

Just weeks ago, 788 tonnes of industrial salt, a quantity enough for 400,000 people in one year, was found to have been processed and sold in China.  Authorities cracked down on the culprits, but it raises a huge red flag as to the potential quality of your table salt.  Industrial salt consumption can contribute to high blood pressure, hypertension, and the risk of heart attack and stroke.

10. Green Peas

A horrific instance of fake green peas, treated with green dye and sodium metabisulfite (a chemical that is used as bleach and as a preservative) were found in China, originating from a soy bean/ snow pea mixture.  The chemicals used were found to cause cancer and inhibit the body's ability to absorm calcium.  They also didn't soften when boiled and turned a strange green color.

The messages here are not meant to scare, but rather to inform of the potential dangers you can face if you buy food from an unvetted source.
