"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. They know themselves better than you do." - Maya Angelou
Ah, yes. Let's piss everyone on the far left the hell off today.
Ever since Trump won the presidency in the 2016, there has been a train of thought passed around in leftist circles that if Hillary Clinton hadn't won the Democratic nomination for president, Trump would not have been in the White House at all.
In fact, they suggest (and get ready to laugh your asses off for this one) that if Bernie Sanders had been the Democrat nominee in 2016, he would have beaten Trump. Handily even.
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Yeah, no. Just...no.
"B-but, DetroitOtaku, all the polls back then suggested that if Bernie had been the nominee, he would have beaten Trump!"
Yeah, and to this I say: so what? What makes you think that the polls would still have favored Bernie even after a bunch of dirty laundry about his past as a Communist radical would have been aired out by the GOP in ads, let alone the debates?
Because if you seriously think a Bolshevik in sheep's clothing who can't do basic math would have beaten Trump in 2016, you're snorting a dangerous low-grade form of crack. No offense.
First off, let me start off by saying this: both me and expert pollster Richard Baris share the same viewpoint that aside from the polls, NOTHING about 2016 indicated that the Democrats would hold the White House for a third straight term. It's VERY hard for one party to hold the presidency for more than two terms, even when circumstances are good for the party currently in power. Just ask Richard Nixon and Al Gore. It's not impossible, but it is very rare.
But Bernie Sanders would not have beaten Trump either. In fact, I'd argue he would have lost worse than Hillary. MUCH worse. Because Bernie is not the electoral powerhouse than many leftists want you to believe. Even a 5th grader would have been able to expose the fact that Bernie is demonstrably overrated. This is especially evident when you consider Bernie's past, because oh man, it would sink his campaign almost immediately.
Turning Sanders into an electorally viable candidate nationwide would mean whitewashing his Communist past. Which would be near-impossible to do.
Let us first go back to the 1960s.
During the mid-1960s, Bernie Sanders was attending the University of Chicago and was a Marxist radical. When he was a student there, he was a member of the Young People’s Socialist League, the youth wing of the Socialist Party USA. He also organized for the United Packinghouse Workers Union, a Communist front group which was under investigation by the House Un-American Activites Committee at that time. After he graduated with a degree in political science, he moved to his now-permanent home in Vermont, where he headed the American People’s History Society, another Communist front group. During that time, he praised Eugene Debs, who was imprisoned for espionage and hailed as "America's Greatest Marxist." Bernie still has a portrait of Debs hanging in his senate office.
Bernie spent most of his life as an angry Bolshevik agitator who never accomplished much of anything. And yet many leftists think he would beat Donald J. Trump in a presidential election. One of the first jobs he had was registering people for food stamps. He later got married, and took his first bride to live in a maple sugar shack with a dirt floor. He later had a child out of wedlock, went on unemployment, and his wife soon left him. He also tried carpentry, but one friend told Politico Magazine that "He was a shitty carpenter. His carpentry was not going to support him, and didn’t." They also said that he was almost always poor and that he had his utilities turned off a lot. His friends considered him to be a slob who kept a messy apartment. Ouch.
They also said that all he ever talked about was about socialism and wanting to destroy the rich. In his own words, Bernie said "the whole quality of life in America is based on greed", and that he believed in “the redistribution of wealth in this nation.” Something like that would absolutely sink Bernie in the debates, and the GOP would have weaponized that statement in ads ad infinitum.
There's also the fact that Bernie hates discussing his Jewish heritage. "Bernie Sanders Is Jewish, but He Doesn't Like to Talk About It," The New York Times stated in an article. He only likes to describe his Polish ancestry, not his Jewish ancestry. Yes, Bernie has disavowed Judaism. The New York Times described him as a “Non-Jewish Jew”, a term coined by a Marxist in an essay explaining anti-Semitism, including the Holocaust, as a “superficial” reaction against capitalism. He has never been a practicing Jew, is not part of a Jewish community, and hates using the "J" word.
He's also notoriously anti-Israel and has called for dropping American support of Israel for over half a century. In 1971, he chanted "No guns for Israel!" at an audience. Even though the Yom Kippur War two years later brought Israel to the brink of destruction, he still did not care, and in 1988, he said that "It is wrong that the United States provides arms to Israel.” Two years later, he called for the U.S. to put more pressure on Israel.
Bernie was also a fan of the Sandinistas' socialist revolution in Nicaragua, as he praised the Sandinistas' "land reform" for "giving, for the first time in their lives, real land to farmers so that they can have something that they grow. Nobody denies that they are making significant progress." But that actually wasn't the case. Landowners in Nicaragua had their land stolen, and Bernie didn't care because he thought landowners were "rich." In 1985, he traveled to Nicaragua to celebrate the rise of the Sandinista government, calling it a “heroic revolution.”
The Sandinista regime also chanted "Death to the Jews," "Jewish Pigs" and "What Hitler started we will finish." They also ethnically cleansed Nicaragua's Jewish population and marched the country's indigenous Indian population into churches and set them on fire. And yet he still defended them despite all that, even denouncing the Reagan administration's backing of the Contra rebels and tried to lobby Reagan into brokering a peace deal to stop the war there.
His past support of the Sandinista regime ALONE would cost him a TON of Jewish votes. Sure, definitely not all of it as American Jews still vote majority-Democrat, but it would cost him a good chunk of it. He also adopted Managua as a sister city when he was mayor of Burlington, and even invited Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega to visit the US.
In fact, let's talk about his time as mayor of Burlington.
Bernie was elected mayor of Burlington in 1981, and when he was mayor, he made a complete mess. He restricted property rights for landlords, set price controls and raised property taxes to pay for communal land trusts, pissing off small businesses in the city. He also defended Fidel Castro, stating that "He educated the kids, gave them health care, totally transformed the society!" Yes, Castro totally did transform Cuba. By torturing and murdering thousands, confiscating private property, destroying Cuba's economy to the point that most Cubans are getting by on less than $2 a day. Thousands died trying to escape as well.
Also, he took multiple goodwill trips to the Soviet Union when he was mayor, where he also adopted a Soviet sister city on the outskirts of Moscow. He even put up a Soviet flag in his office, which put off even liberals. Bernie was praising Soviet youth programs during a time when Jewish refuseniks were still being denied permission to leave Russia for the West.
Yeah, no. Considering that Bernie praised the USSR and the Sandinista regime, as well as Eugene Debs, no way would he be able to hide from his past. You can bet lots of money that the GOP would have aired all this dirty laundry out in attack ads for the general public to see, and that Trump would have used this to humiliate Bernie in the debates. The GOP would have had INFINITE ammo to use against Bernie to stop him from becoming president, and I guarantee you it would have turned off even many minorities as well.
In fact, we saw this during the 2020 Democratic primary. His pro-Castro, pro-Sandinista comments sunk him in the primary against Biden when they re-entered circulation in the media:
Bernie wants to implement a single-payer health care system and put private health insurance and drug companies out of business. He wants to break up banks and nationalize the energy industry, dump oil and coal, along with making college "free", implementing universal basic income, as well as attempting to create jobs through massive public works projects. All of this would cost the U.S. near $18 trillion, which is most of this country's national debt already.
And who would pay for it all? WE THE PEOPLE. He wants to hit the top 1% with a 90% and higher tax rate, charge Wall Street a “speculation tax,” and implement a “global-warming tax.”
And of course, his supporters would have you believe that this is all false. They will try to convince you that Bernie is not a Communist, and that he is a "Capitalist who supports social safety nets." They say that he is an economic populist whose policies would appeal to white working class voters in the Rust Belt.
LOL. I'm pretty sure even Michigan (as stupid as they are), Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania wouldn't vote for a guy who defended Castro, took many goodwill trips to the USSR and its allied nations, was part of Communist front groups, and supports implementing welfare policies that this country cannot afford.
LAY OFF THE GODDAMN CRACK PIPE. All the evidence that I have shown is proof that Bernie is a Bolshevik, and he still pines for what Debs called “the Greater Revolution yet to come.”
"B-but DetroitOtaku, what he means by Socialism is not Cuba or the Soviet Union! He only wants the U.S. to have what countries like Sweden, Denmark and Norway have!"
First off, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway are not Socialist. Sweden, Denmark and Norway have NO MINIMUM WAGE. Yes, they do have government-run healthcare systems, bigger welfare systems than in America, as well as higher taxes than in America, but they are not Socialist. Denmark's prime minister even stated that they were not Socialist.
And they're all moving away from Socialism as well, as Socialist policies strangled their economies. And in many ways, the economies of those countries, especially Sweden (as shown in the above video), are much less regulated than even WE ARE, as they heavily deregulated their markets and privatized many government-run industries. Corporations in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway don't have to put up with American regulatory practices on almost any level.
You prepared to make that sacrifice to fund your welfare policies and healthcare systems? Because that's what Sweden, Norway, and Denmark had to do. And its also a temporary fix.
All you leftists can pound on the Caps Lock key all day long and call me out, but here's an important lesson for you: No lie, spin, or scam can beat REALITY. Reality will always win. And the reality is that Bernie is not electorally viable nationally for the Democrats. His past as a Communist radical would have given Trump and the GOP INFINITE ammo to use against him in attack ads and debates. Bernie Sanders is George McGovern 2.0, and like McGovern, Bernie would have been obliterated in a presidential election as well.
Once his dirty laundry had been fully aired out by Trump and the GOP, Bernie would have alienated many ancestral Democrats, and many would stay home, though some may have come out for Trump while voting straight Democrat downballot. He would have also alienated many white working class voters, many suburban voters, even suburban women and some college-age women as well. He would have turned off the Cuban vote, a good chunk of the Jewish vote, certain Asian voting blocs like Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese (some but not all of course), Caribbean and Sub-Saharan African blacks, and many white middle class voters in general. Trump would have trounced him in debates by bringing up his Communist past, and Bernie would have no way to counter him. And then Trump would have pulled away in the polls.
Bernie would have easily lost Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona, he would have been blown out in Florida, he would lose Texas by a near 2-1 margin, he'd lose Minnesota, New Hampshire, Virginia, New Mexico, Maine, even Colorado, while putting states like Illinois, Rhode Island, Oregon, Washington, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, and Connecticut in play.
Trump would have beaten Bernie in either 2016 or 2020, especially if there was no COVID-19 in 2020. But most especially 2016. He would have lost way worse than Hillary, and Trump would have actually carried the popular vote by a reasonable margin.
This is what I think a Trump vs. Bernie presidential election would have looked like:
