Remote Narrows in Palo Duro Canyon

This area is a beautiful narrows in a remote area of Palo Duro Canyon. When I say remote, I mean remote. It's one of the most difficult features I've reached in the canyon because of the bouldering and thickets you must go through at the mouth of the narrows. We did this hike earlier this year, and I'm just now getting the media processed.

It is also one of the hikes where I'll not be sharing the location other than saying it's near the border of the state park. Please don't ask for GPS locations or nearby trails. There are zero trails in this part of the canyon, and I don't want to be responsible for sending anyone off to a mostly unreachable target. Sorry.

This feature was on list of sites we compiled from researching satellite images. That alone doesn't make it worth the effort to hike. With this feature being near the park boundary, I was able to check it out via another method. I've been working with a lease holder and the state park to find any fence lines that are in place denoting the boundary between private and park lands in some of the most remote and rugged parts of the canyon with a drone. Anytime I fly one of the fence-finding missions, I always have my compiled list of features to check out. On this date, I was going to be flying near this feature.

This clip starts upstream where it is an obviously dry, wide narrow with some depth. Toward the middle of the feature, it narrows significantly to the point where it could be a deep slot, but we couldn't tell from the aerial footage alone. Toward the outlet of the feature, it widens a little and empties and falls into a small pool of water. In short, this aerial footage elevated this feature up on our must-hike list.

This hike was not easy, but I was able to get to it with great difficulty along with some of my renegade hiking buddies. We were also on the lookout for any fencing that the aerial scan didn't find. The narrows ended up not having any slot features. It was much wider at the base than it was at the top. In any case, it was a beautiful narrows.

The walls were about 15-20 feet

The midpoint was narrow at the top

Here is a quick walkthrough of the narrows.

In the end, we didn't find any fencing near the park/private boundary.
