After using Minds here for a couple weeks, I've made some observations about NSFW content and have some suggestions that would benefit all users, not just those who browse NSFW.
These are not set in stone and I would love to hear what everyone has to say about these suggestions! So - let's get to it!
Let's add more NSFW settings to the current Allow vs Ask and name it Hide. Setting to Hide will skip posts marked nsfw entirely instead of a confirmation whether the user is over 18. Further, create individual controls for allow/ask/hide for each type of NSFW content with the UI allowing for allow/ask/hide globally.
Facebook-style reactions in addition to Minds upvote and downvote for funny ๐ , insightful ๐ค etc. Additionally, add a ๐ reaction designed for users who a) feel the post should should have been marked NSFW in the first place; or b) agree with the NSFW-ness of the post; or c) some other memey reason I haven't considered!
This item is more of a philosophy of the platform with a possible technical solution so just to get the brainstorm going.
As minds users, I've noticed we're generally chill and don't want to report posts unless things get particularly egregious or obviously illegal. So when a post comes by which should have been marked NSFW, it's just an inconvenience, not really a reportable offense (even though it technically is) - we'd prefer to self-regulate rather than bring in a third party. What if a post garnered enough ๐ reactions (see previous suggestion), in some ratio of views/reactions, and then either a) an automatic notification sent to the poster, suggesting to flag it appropriately; or b) minds flags it automatically.
Generally, suspending users and posts for moderation is something I disagree with, so my input here is gentle notifications, suggestions, or alerts instead of bringing down the ban-hammer.
How about hashtags which automatically flag as NSFW? Currently, if a user uses #nsfw as a hashtag, it remains unmarked as an NSFW post because the systems (assumedly) don't inform one another. Consider automatically marking a post as nsfw based on tags. Consider a pop-up "You've used a hashtag that is typically nsfw, what kind of nsfw do you want to flag? Multiselect: Nude/porn/gore/etc/none"
Merge similar activity in the notifications. If ten users vote up a post, I want to see only one alert instead of ten. The similar-notifications should stack into themselves until "seen" - at which point the merging behavior should reset to zero. If additional, similar activity continues after it is seen and before it is seen again, a new "merge slot" will advance the counter. Display should give precedence to the first user in the stack, so @AlwaysSteve gets credit for the slot: "Steve, Always and 9 others liked your activity"
As an addendum to the previous suggestion and the aforementioned reactions available (e.g. ๐, ๐ค, ๐), consider grouping all the reactions together as similar activity instead of "2 lols, 4 hmms, etc" and simply show "Steve and 5 others reacted to your activity"
Allow for users to decide what kinds of reactions are available to them, including dislike. On at least two occasions, I've accidentally downvoted posts or replies either because my kid bumped my hand and I wasn't looking, or it was a butt-dial situation. Perhaps add optional confirmation dialog pop-ups for negative reactions.
