O que levou você a documentar o tema de *A Arte de Ser*, e por que foi fundamental contar essa história agora?
A Arte De Ser é um filme sobre arte, fala sobre enaltecimento preto e também sobre fazermos parte de um todo. Fui levado ao tema pela vontade de documentar histórias negras, gosto de encontrar e contar histórias com as quais eu me identifico. Tendo a oportunidade de fazer um curta-metragem na minha cidade natal, Barra do Piraí, no estado do Rio de Janeiro, sabia que deveria contar uma história sobre pessoas de Barra do Piraí. Então, escolhi artistas visuais que mexessem com telas, fazendo um paralelo com meu trabalho de fazer arte através de uma tela, que é a tela do cinema. Foi fundamental contar essa história agora, porque o audiovisual de Barra do Piraí está crescendo e as pessoas precisam ver filmes sobre histórias reais de nossa região e incentivar os moradores de Barra a correrem atrás de seus sonhos também.
What led you to document the theme of *A Arte de Ser*, and why was it essential to tell this story now?
A Arte De Ser is a film about art; it speaks about Black elevation and also about being part of a whole. I was drawn to the topic by a desire to document Black stories; I like finding and telling stories I identify with. Having the opportunity to make a short film in my hometown, Barra do Piraí, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, I knew I should tell a story about people from Barra do Piraí. So, I chose visual artists who worked with canvases, drawing a parallel with my own work of making art through a screen—the cinema screen. It was essential to tell this story now because the audiovisual scene in Barra do Piraí is growing, and people need to see films about real stories from our region and encourage the residents of Barra to chase their dreams too.
O filme explora a identidade e "a arte de ser" — como você estabeleceu uma relação de confiança com os personagens para capturar momentos tão íntimos?
Esse foi o meu segundo filme de documentário e sempre me preocupo com o modo de lidar com os entrevistados. Tento ser acolhedor desde o primeiro contato com o entrevistado, para que durante as gravações a pessoa se sinta à vontade para falar tudo que puder. Em A Arte De Ser, acredito que foi tudo tão especial, os encontros e conversas prévias me ajudaram a ter certeza de que seriam ótimas escolhas para o filme, tive uma conexão especial com os três entrevistados.
The film explores identity and "the art of being"—how did you build a relationship of trust with the subjects to capture such intimate moments?
This was my second documentary film, and I always care deeply about how I interact with interviewees. I try to be welcoming from the very first contact so that during filming the person feels comfortable sharing everything they can. In A Arte De Ser, I believe everything was so special; our meetings and preliminary conversations helped me confirm that they were great choices for the film. I had a special connection with all three interviewees.

Fiquei muito feliz com o resultado, isso mostra que as pessoas compraram a minha ideia e além disso, faz sentido. Mesmo postando no Instagram e mandando mensagens privadas para convidar as pessoas a votarem e assistir meu filme, não imaginava que muitas pessoas iriam parar alguns minutos do seu dia-a-dia para assistir e votar no projeto.
Winning the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short Film reflects strong audience engagement. How did you feel receiving this recognition?
I was very happy with the result; it shows that people bought into my idea and, beyond that, that it resonates. Even though I posted on Instagram and sent private messages inviting people to vote and watch my film, I never imagined so many people would take a few minutes out of their daily lives to watch and vote for the project.
Qual foi a sua estratégia estilística para combinar o estilo de documentário observacional com composições visuais artísticas?
Desde quando o projeto começou a ganhar forma em minha mente, eu já imaginava inserir momentos de composições visuais e busquei por referências em diretores que eu gosto muito, como o Spike Lee, e também em pinturas feitas por pessoas negras para a representação de cada pessoa entrevistada. Então com uma conversa prévia com os entrevistados, eu pude pensar em momentos onde os artistas olhassem para a câmera, criando uma conexão com o espectador.
What was your stylistic strategy for combining the observational documentary style with artistic visual compositions?
From the moment the project began taking shape in my mind, I envisioned including moments of visual composition. I looked for references in directors I admire greatly, like Spike Lee, as well as in paintings made by Black artists for the representation of each interviewee. So, through prior conversations with the interviewees, I was able to plan moments where the artists looked directly into the camera, creating a connection with the viewer.
Como você selecionou a trilha sonora e a paisagem sonora para complementar a voz autêntica dos personagens?
Para a trilha sonora procurei por artistas locais da cidade de Barra do Piraí e região. Em minhas buscas conheci o cantor Aguafriano e sua música "Me Encontro", que fala sobre se encontrar e não se diminuir, esse significado funcionou muito bem com o início do filme. No decorrer da narrativa, foram selecionadas músicas instrumentais em bancos de áudio, com foco em hip-hop e R&B, para compor o ritmo do filme. Por fim a música dos créditos de TcJ, "Eu Sou Artista", enaltece o artista, concluindo os pensamentos propostos pelo curta-metragem.
How did you select the soundtrack and soundscape to complement the authentic voice of the characters?
For the soundtrack, I looked for local artists from the city of Barra do Piraí and the surrounding region. During my search, I came across the singer Aguafriano and his song "Me Encontro", which is about finding oneself and not belittling oneself; that message worked very well for the beginning of the film. As the narrative progresses, instrumental tracks from audio libraries—focused on hip-hop and R&B—were selected to shape the rhythm of the film. Finally, the end-credits song by TcJ, "Eu Sou Artista", elevates the artist, bringing closure to the thoughts presented by the short film.
O que mais surpreendeu você durante as filmagens e acabou mudando a trajetória do documentário?
O que mais me surpreendeu durante as filmagens foi o momento em que a artista Letty fala sobre sua mãe e se emociona, pois em conversas prévias ela não tinha me falado sobre essa história. Durante a entrevista ela comenta sobre a pintura que está fazendo para sua mãe já falecida, a emoção foi enorme e Letty não conseguiu conter o choro, no momento fiquei um pouco sem reação, paramos a entrevista, eu a abracei e perguntei se estava confortável para continuar e sua resposta foi sim. Na conversa ela fala sobre como a sua mãe foi importante para ela ser quem ela é hoje e isso só contribuiu para que a mensagem final do filme ficasse ainda mais importante de ser contada.
What surprised you the most during filming that ended up changing the trajectory of the documentary?
What surprised me most during filming was the moment artist Letty talks about her mother and gets emotional, because in our prior conversations she hadn't shared that story with me. During the interview, she mentions the painting she is creating for her late mother; the emotion was overwhelming and Letty couldn't hold back her tears. At that moment, I was a bit stunned; we stopped the interview, I hugged her, and asked if she felt comfortable continuing, and she said yes. In that conversation, she speaks about how important her mother was in shaping who she is today, which only added to making the final message of the film even more vital to tell.
Que responsabilidade única você sente como documentarista ao retratar vidas reais na tela?
É um sentimento de apreensão, pois penso primeiro se os entrevistados se sentirão bem retratados em suas próprias histórias, depois me preocupo se minha narrativa faz sentido para mim, minha equipe e também aos entrevistados e por último me preocupo com o público e se irão compreender meus pensamentos.
What unique responsibility do you feel as a documentarian when portraying real lives on screen?
It's a feeling of apprehension, because I first think about whether the interviewees will feel well-represented in their own stories, then I worry whether my narrative makes sense to me, my crew, and the interviewees, and lastly I worry about the audience and whether they will understand my thoughts.
De que maneira a realização de *A Arte de Ser* moldou suas aspirações futuras no cinema documental?
A Arte De Ser foi o meu terceiro curta-metragem e o segundo documentário, é notável a evolução narrativa e a maturidade de temas, principalmente na forma como foram realizados. Então, realizar esse projeto e ter feito ele na minha cidade foi bem especial para mim, soube que posso fazer mais projetos em minha região e ser reconhecido por isso. Tenho certeza que esse filme me fez evoluir muito como realizador audiovisual.
In what way has the making of A Arte de Ser shaped your future aspirations in documentary filmmaking?
A Arte De Ser was my third short film and second documentary. The narrative evolution and maturity of themes are noticeable, especially in how they were executed. So making this project in my hometown was very special to me; I learned that I can undertake more projects in my region and be recognized for them. I am certain that this film helped me evolve tremendously as an audiovisual director.
