1. What initially drew you to cinema, and how did you develop the free and intuitive directing style that characterizes your work?
Karen: My relationship with audiovisual work began when I was 13. I loved exploring the computer, and back when I used Windows XP, I ended up discovering Windows Movie Maker. Realizing that I could overlay text on images myself and create credits identical to those in movies, I understood I was capable of producing what I saw on television and in cinema. It was this basic video editor that sparked my deep interest in editing and creation.
My free and intuitive directing style matured later, after studying Cinema at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and directing more than five short films. The real turning point came when an acting coach shared with me a book full of questions about filmmaking. In trying to answer all of those questions, I understood that my approach was, in essence, very free.
Today, my process begins in imagination: as I read the script, I start to visualize and hear the scenes in my mind, already defining and writing down the shots I want to film based on what’s in my head. Of course, I also draw on references from my own visual repertoire, looking for what best serves the narrative. However, the set always throws up unexpected challenges. So, although following intuition is essential, I learned to balance it with the reality of production. Faced with the challenges of shooting, I adapt my imagined vision to what is feasible in the moment, always making sure the final result is clear and communicates effectively with the audience.
No entanto, o set sempre impõe imprevistos.
2. What inspired O Ciclo, and what did you hope the audience would take away from the film?
2. O que inspirou O Ciclo e o que você esperava que o público levasse do filme?
Karen: The main inspiration for the film came from literature, more specifically from a short story called “O Pipoqueiro” (“The Popcorn Vendor”), which is part of the book Colorido Só Por Fora (“Colorful Only on the Outside”), by writer Jessé Duarte — an author also from Contagem, Minas Gerais. When I read the story, I was fascinated by it and immediately saw its cinematic potential. It was from this enchantment that I decided to adapt the short story into this short film.
As for the audience’s reception and the message I hoped to leave, the experience has been very revealing. The film has been widely screened in schools, reaching students around 12 to 13 years old. It is impressive to see the impact the work has on these teenagers. The narrative awakens in them a profound reflection on the consequences of our choices and the importance of listening to older people — after all, it raises the question of whether the character Luiza might not have died had she listened to the popcorn vendor.
However, beyond this question of obedience and protection, the film leads them to an inevitable and very mature realization about our own mortality. It introduces the awareness that all of us will, one day, reach the end. Giving this young audience a broader awareness of the cycle of life and death is something very valuable.
3. O Ciclo traveled to festivals in Brazil and Germany. What did the festival experience teach you about the audience and the international reception of Brazilian cinema?
Karen: This experience taught me that the audience is a fundamental element of my work as a director. Having an audience means the film has reached its destination; it is the culmination of our whole process of narrative construction. It’s fascinating because, through the eyes of others, we come to understand the true power of screening a film. This space for sharing shows me how far my work can go, the impact it can have, and how much I can also grow from this exchange.
During the debates — the famous Q&As after the screenings — I notice that people bring up very pertinent questions and are open to sharing the reflections the work has just awakened in them. This feedback, this listening, is vital to filmmaking. Therefore, having the opportunity to talk directly with audiences and exchange experiences with filmmakers from all over the world is extremely enriching and brings me invaluable lessons.
4. Your work includes feature films, short films, television, web series, and advertising. How does working in different formats influence your creative process?
Karen: Working in multiple formats is, first and foremost, an immense learning experience. Each type of audiovisual delivery helps me understand and balance the specific goals of each project. As an artist, I try to maintain a constant learning mindset, which is essential, even for knowing how to deal with failure. Mistakes are inevitable and even necessary; after all, it is from them that we discover how to improve our work going forward.
Furthermore, the diversity of projects brings challenges of very different proportions, which helps me find the ideal language for each moment. The artistic endeavor lies precisely in the choices I have to make for each format. In some productions, I have immense creative freedom; in others, the parameters are much stricter. Therefore, the main lesson this plurality brings me is knowing how to recognize these limits and understand how far I can expand my creativity, respecting the needs of each project while fulfilling my role as a director.
5. What can you tell us about Brilhante and what inspired you to develop this story as your next feature film?
Karen: Brilhante is actually a project authored by Carol Silva, from the Minas Gerais-based production company Limonada Audiovisual. I am not writing the script; I act as a guest director. My role is to direct the scenes and collaborate with the creative process as a whole, from development to completion. It is a project where I hope to give my best, adding my vision to Carol’s authorial work.

6. What was it like making Quatro Meninas and having it selected by major Brazilian festivals, and how did that affect your career as a filmmaker?
Karen: It was an immense joy to see the film selected at major festivals in Brazil. This has a very positive impact on my career, especially because our audiovisual financing model in the country depends heavily on public funding policies. When your work is selected by established festivals, it acts as an important door-opener for visibility, sparking the interest of other production companies in hiring you. Ultimately, it is a seal of approval that validates our directing process and boosts our professional career.
7. What challenges and opportunities do you see for female filmmakers working independently in Brazil today?
Karen: The challenges are still numerous, ranging from the struggle for pay parity with male directors to the difficulty of forming business partnerships in a market historically dominated by them. On the other hand, opportunities begin to arise the moment we, women, organize ourselves. When we start debating these themes and consulting each other as professionals in the sector, we manage to secure real progress, especially in winning public policies and funding so that more women can get their films made.
8. What advice would you give to filmmakers who have a personal vision but limited resources to get their stories to the public?
Karen: Today, with broad access to creative tools and information, my main advice is: make your films. Plan as well as you can within your reality and simply shoot. Seek the cooperation of those closest to you to make the work happen, and always work toward finishing the project, to the point where it can be submitted to a festival or a video platform to find its audience. Don’t stop creating for lack of material resources. The simple act of doing is already a process of discovery and maturation; it allows you to adopt a mindset of constant learning. We grow and learn precisely from the things we follow through on.
