1. What initially brought you to cinema and screenwriting, and how was your journey from independent cinema to academic research?
I've always been very interested in stories, in general. Ever since I was very small. I come from a huge family in the south of the country, where everyone connected around a central figure, a centenarian great-grandmother, in whose house stories were always told. As a child, I paid attention to everything and everyone, especially the stories from old times, which fascinated me. In my head, my imagination was buzzing. The best moments, however, were those when I was left alone with my great-grandmother, because then I could satisfy my curiosity in front of someone with over a century of life. Stories from wartime in the south of the country, about slavery, and about the first election in which women were allowed to vote were issues that made me think about the world I was part of from an early age. At the same time, the incredible story of a rain of fish that she had witnessed in her childhood took me to another place, where the magical became possible.
From then on, and also through contact with television, books, and the films of the quartet Os Trapalhões on Sunday afternoons at the Cine Ideal, thinking about and telling stories was always something that seduced me.
Thus, both screenwriting and academic research production are ways of telling stories. I believe that one thing naturally led to another. Researching and writing for cinema, directing short films, writing about cinema and television, venturing into literature (or rather, an attempt at it...), and diving deep into a doctoral thesis on a specific cycle of national films are different ways of immersing oneself in specific universes and pulling good, interesting narratives from them.
2. The short film Soccer Boys screened at more than 90 festivals and received 15 awards. What did this experience teach you about documentary filmmaking and connecting with the audience?
This short film was, for sure, my film work with the greatest impact. What I had in my hands to tell a story was not only the emergence of the first gay soccer team in the city of Rio de Janeiro, but also an opportunity to talk about what affected me directly and what also needed to be spoken about and discussed, in the sense of trying, in some way, to touch the audience regarding prejudice.
My initial goal was to make a film that was capable of engaging with people who are not part of the LGBTQIAPN+ community, precisely to plant a seed against prejudice there, and for that I understood that I first needed to captivate the audience before taking a stand. And I only had 15 minutes for that.
I had an excellent team with me, which made the process richer, and I believe we managed to create an interesting narrative and attract the viewer. The result went far beyond expectations; there were a few years following the film as it was selected for festivals all over the world and won important awards, especially those referring to the audience's choice, as this shows that a connection was made.
Regarding the festivals for which the film was selected, each one has a specific audience, and that makes each experience unique. The film's premiere took place at one of the most important festivals linked to diversity in the country, Mix Brasil, which takes place annually in São Paulo. Being there, in that showcase, was of a very large scale. Among the various festivals, several were linked to the universe of soccer, and leaving the 2019 edition of Cine Foot with the best short film award was meaningful, because the audience interested in soccer is not always open to issues related to homophobia.
Making a film is always an attempt to reach the audience, which can yield different results. I think Soccer Boys was a film that brought excellent results in terms of work. But what I really hope is that it made a difference to those who watched it and contributed to reducing prejudice.

3. What was the inspiration behind Soccer Boys and what did you discover about the characters/themes during filming?
I've always really liked soccer, but something that bothers me to this day is the machismo and homophobia that are very strongly linked to this universe. So I felt I needed to do something about it. When I learned about the 1st Champions Ligay happening here in Rio de Janeiro, I felt there was a story to be told there.
Regarding the discoveries, I can say that the whole process was very rich, from research to post-production, obviously going through filming and everything that came after the premiere.
From the stories I heard throughout this process, perhaps the most important discovery was that I needed to take a stronger stand on the issue of homophobia, and that this went beyond making a film. And from then on, I believe I became more combative and active regarding this issue.
4. How does your academic research on Brazilian and Rio cinema from the 1970s influence your view of contemporary Brazilian cinema?
I was born in 1977, so when the decade ended, I was still very young. The 1970s always fascinated me because I always considered it "my decade," but I knew little about it because I couldn't experience it at its peak. I think there's something personal there...
Looking at what happened in that decade in terms of audiovisuals was a way to connect with what I didn't live through. The decade brought great successes on television to the public, such as the telenovelas Irmãos Coragem (1970) and Selva de Pedra (1972), times when families gathered around the TV to follow stories. At the same time, cinema brought over 10 million viewers to watch Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1976). A lot happened there, in those years.
Looking at the erotic comedy produced during that time was a way of looking at popular cinema, which was made for the general public with the goal of entertaining, something necessary for the working class, who work hard but receive little in return. But there was something there that bothered me—the fact that I heard these films weren't interested in questioning the problems occurring in a country immersed in a dictatorship. So, looking at these films in a more welcoming and investigative way helped me understand the production of the era and understand how Brazilian cinema transformed over the years, realizing that much from that era remains, such as talking about our issues in a questioning way, but also laughing at what affects us, to try to see the world in a lighter way. Cinema can entertain and provide reflection at the same time; I think that's the great thing about this art form.
5. In what ways do your experiences as a researcher, screenwriter, director, and producer interconnect and influence each other?
I think the connection lies in the possibility of telling stories. Scientific research leads us to other possibilities that we don't normally stop to evaluate, because it takes time. But when we manage to do that, connecting science with reality, we can not only better understand the world, but also deliver something more positive based on our experiences and what we seek to do professionally. Maybe I can summarize it like this... telling stories in a more critical way and seeking to provoke transformation through knowledge. I don't know if I'm succeeding, but I think that's the path.
6. What do you believe independent Brazilian filmmakers today can learn from the history of our cinema?
Knowing the history that precedes us is a fundamental condition, whether so that we can better understand the society we are part of (and be agents of change), or to practice the profession we chose. If I want to be a good lawyer, I need to understand the field from its origins, focusing on important milestones like the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi or Roman Law. If I want to be a good doctor in a certain specialty, I need to know the research and protocols that were used over time, to better understand what is done today to treat a disease. The same happens in cinema. We need to know the techniques, whether the narrative forms adapted by American industrial cinema or the editing experiments of Soviet cinema; and what is closer, our own Brazilian way of telling stories through cinema. Knowing our classics, our experiments, the professionals who preceded us, and the stories that were told is essential to occupying our space in this history.
7. Today cinema manifests in theaters, festivals, streaming platforms, podcasts, and digital media. How do you view the impact of these changes on filmmakers' work?
We increasingly need to think about more possibilities when conceiving a film. If I have the conditions to think of something specific for movie theaters and major festivals, I can focus on one type of cinema. If I need to consider financial returns, I must work on a film that works both on the big screen and on smaller screens. If I need to break into the market and make a name for myself, I can start with small projects for the internet and digital media. A good professional is one who is capable of navigating these different possibilities and, in the face of a more complex world, needs to be attentive and open to changes.
8. What advice would you give to emerging filmmakers in Brazil who wish to develop both a creative career and a deeper understanding of cinema?
Study, read a lot, watch many movies, go to the theater, watch soap operas and reality shows, because that brings us closer both to scholarly knowledge and to the general public. Pure knowledge is worth nothing if we don't know how to apply it, and to apply it, we need to understand people. If I want to produce cinema or any other audiovisual format, I need to be connected with the public and be able to offer them good experiences, make them have fun, and provoke them to think.
