Timidly, I'm raising my hand in the class of the smartest man in the world, Chris Langan, to beg to differ. I have had several experiences where very specific and highly unlikely future events popped into my head and then later occurred. (Precognition is the most common, most verified type of psychic experience.) This led me to the obvious conclusion that time must be an illusion. If the future can be known, then cause and effect over time is also part of the illusion, which plays havoc with the free will theory of life. My tentative theory is that the purpose of life is to develop our minds so that we can understand the events of our life to the deepest and fullest degree possible, given our circumstances, thus maximizing the love we can bring into being in this world.
The way I think of life is as a piece of music, already written, which we play using the instrument of ourselves in accordance with our musicianship, understanding, sensibility and passion. Practicing on our instrument is probably improved by prayer to our creator. Some lives are like "Mary had a little lamb" and some are "The Marriage of Figaro". It may even be possible that some lives are like jazz music, capable of infinite improvisation on a theme. "If music be the food of love, play on."
My husband, actor Tom O'Rourke, ( http://imdb.to/2mOzcqb) was an abused child with a mental illness that he hid. He never got to play all the wonderful music that was inside him. He was stifled by his mental illness. The mentally ill part of his mind perhaps becomes a residual bad karma or sin that will have to be brought into the light of understanding, which may involve reincarnation. I wrote a book about my experiences called BEDEVILED - https://amzn.to/2JYoV2m
