Trump offered Germany to send LNG -  liquified gas - ships to ensure their energy supply without further increasing their dependence on Russia.

"U.S. opposition to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is much more about world peace and national security than any chance to sell liquified natural gas (LNG) into the Europe’s market. American LNG is better positioned for sale into more lucrative Pacific markets, although it could shore up energy requirements in Europe."

Although Trump massively expanded US energy production and tried to counter Russia, MSNBC and CNN kept accusing him of being controlled by Putin. In Germany, they actually mocked Trump over his highly intelligent proposals:

Trump is a genius

He totally understood what was going on. All those who attacked him were either stupid or traitors who intentionally undermined western countries. We've never seen a better illustration of that fact!
