The "get woke, go broke" phenomenon can at one level be seen as a simple matter of companies adopting marketing that is so outrageous and out of touch that people quite literally stop buying. And to be sure, there is truth in that statement. However, I believe I have seen, firsthand, an explanation of why "getting woke" necessarily leads to "going broke," even if everyone is generally accepting of the "woke" message, or at least not opposing it.
The root cause of "going broke" is not the message, but the fundamental requirements of getting woke. This is how the "getting woke" process works:
1) Activists infect an organization by getting hired in.
2) They do everything they can to bully, bribe, and blackmail their way into influence with the board of directors.
3) They get going with this narrative of "It's the Current Year, I can't believe we don't have ... !"
4) Board predictably caves, allows the creation of a committee or department
5) Committee/Department demands money
6) More money
7) MORE. MONEY. BIGOT.
8) Demand organization make woke activism a fundamental tenet of its activities
9) Keep ramping up the activism - require it in hiring and training, make it part of the product, whatever you have to do.
10) Did we mention more money?
In brief, getting woke is not about tolerance, but about changing the organization mission and purpose from one of serving customers or an industry, to one of woke activism. Going broke must follow this like night follow day for purely economic reasons: the company or organization exists because its mission involved providing something that adds real value to society (goods and services), and woke activism, over time, demands more and more of the organization funds and attention, which necessarily takes away from its true economic purpose. The damage becomes noticeable once long-term profitability is impacted.
You could say monopolies or near-monopolist organizations like a Facebook could use its large position to engage in woke activism for a long time. And to be sure, its size is what makes it a prime target (of course, the leadership may have been SJW zombies form the beginning). However, part of the get woke, go broke process is to consume the vital components of the organization by, for example, replacing people who can actually code with more woke activists in new hiring. It does take time, but its a finite amount of time.
In addition, while I gave the earlier condition of "people generally accept the woke message and it will still fail," in truth, most do not, and so ever more egregious woke activism also generates more opponents. This will reach a tipping point, where someone with a viable alternative appears and starts stealing large amounts of market share.
It turns out that yes, there is something you can do here. The first is looking for and supporting alternatives. The second is, given the Plan for Action, to find any possible opportunity to educate future executives, board members, and major stakeholders of organizations on the fact that "getting woke" necessarily means "going broke," and as such they have good reason to steer clear.
If you are young, plan on growing your capability as much as possible, so that you can be one of the future executives/board members who says "no more politics in our business/nonprofit! Woke's a joke!"
