O ubiquitous black box
soul of silicon chips and circuit boards
your bold, blinking eye blazing,
teasing, entertaining, training
eye and hand to obliterate the enemy
would you mold me in your image
filling neurons with cold facts
and faceless figures?
O stimulator of reflex and response
dispenser of virtual life and death
can you teach me to live
to understand what I see
to comprehend the sense
to experience the wonder
you who unseeing and unfeeling
are dead to my world.
O for a living guide
faithful footsteps to follow
energetic, yet patient,
encouraging each effort,
delighting in discovery
probing the depths of thought
skillful fingers challenging
me to achieve mastery.
O for a teacher, formed of
flesh and blood and spirit
stimulating willing minds
sensitive to the heart’s hope
a master gardener of the soul
sowing seeds of inspiration
daring me to dream
and reap a meaningful life.
