Ideological bonds

I’ve been all over the spectrum of ideologies and political leanings in my life. Something that has always fascinated me is how an ideology can bring people together. You could say that humans are tribal and that we like to associate with people that think like us; that finding people that are alike brings a sense of security and a confirmation of our bias. But there is something more than that.

There is a reason why people are reluctant to give up their ideology, even when they are challenged or proven wrong. I believe that the ideology and what the group is advocating for is only the tip of the iceberg. There are stronger bonds that keep these people together.

Let’s look at leftists:

When I was a young leftist, I was surrounded by friends that would show up at my door at any hour. We didn’t have much money, but we were close. We smoked weed and play guitar until the sun rise. There was a lot of casual sex and not much promiscuity. People actually cared about each other. Guys would openly express their feelings and the group was there to support one another.

Of course, the topics of equality and the unfairness of the word often came up. Going to protests was actually something people looked forward too. It was a big event. You could see your friends, enjoy yourself while you would oppose the system.

I would describe that experience as a continuation of adolescence as a young adult and a sense of belonging similar to the one you attribute to a family. I can totally understand why people have difficulty letting go of this ideology.

Some leftists continue this lifestyle the rest of their lives. We all know a nice middle age vegan lady who walks barefoot and grows biological veggies in her backyard. She will welcome complete strangers in her home and serve them tea. I think the world is a better place because of people like that.

Then, there is the fanatic communist nut-job:

This angry old fuck who is frustrated that the communist Utopia never happened and who masturbates thinking of his list of people to kill while he is manufacturing bombs in his basement.

If you have ever met a guy like that, you know that pieces of shit like this guy are lost. They cannot be reformed. They have abandoned humanity only to like as hermits who dream of the pain and suffering they can inflict on the world.

Let’s talk about conservatives:

Conservatives are fun. Many of them are well educated. They are responsible people with a clear sense of right and wrong. Most of them are theists. Most of them have had a lot of success in their career and many of them have started their own business. Many conservatives want to surround themselves with successful people.

Most conservatives are pacifists. They enjoy stability and believe that violence doesn’t solve anything. They also view violence as a form of social unrest and that is bad for business.

There isn’t much promiscuity in that community. A conservative is more likely to look for a good mother to their children instead of a girl that is easy.

Something I have noticed is that conservatives are not very socially active when there isn’t an election. They might have a social dinner here and there, but you can spend months without any news from them.

Oddly enough, I have noticed that many conservatives have a very high moral, they seem very happy and content with their lives, even though their lives seems extremely dull.

Now let’s talk about libertarians:

Libertarians are extremely individualist. Their individuality is push to such an extreme that it resembles fanatism. If you use words, such as: the group, the community, the collective, around a libertarian, you will probably notice an expression of disdain in his facial expression, followed with a 30 minutes intellectual deconstruction of the word ‘’collective’’ and why it is a cancer for mankind.

What brings libertarian together isn’t race, religion or other forms of identity. They are drawn to ideas like moths to a neon light.

If there is an event where there will be a philosophical debate about: the economy; society; morals and ethics… you will see a room full of libertarians.

Libertarians pride themselves for their intellectual integrity. You will often see a lot of drama between libertarians over an issue or around something that was said. 2 libertarians that considered themselves friends a month ago will make a series of lengthy YouTube videos where they will attack the other person’s positions. After a few months or years, they might find an issue that they will agree on and become friends again.

Libertarians are the group that have the greatest difficulty building bonds. It is more appealing for people latter in life who enjoy intellectual pursuits. This would explain why this ideology is not very popular for young folks. This is very frustrating for many libertarians because they invest so much time and energy debating other ideologies hoping that reason and evidence will bring them to their side.

In that regard, Libertarians have a lot to learn from the left. They need to learn that people need more than the knowledge that they are right. They need to feel that they are part of a community, if not a family.
