The Red Notebook: Entry 3 Missing 411
I usually have a segment from a film, or a quote to open up these posts that I use as a hook. This time I’m going to open up with a personal experience I had as a kid.
It was sometime in the 90’s. I was four or five around this time. My grandparents lived in a suburb near Washington DC. There were lots of places for a kid to play and explore. One such place was a historic battle field from the Revolution (I think). I would put my back to the walls and pretend I was a soldier taking cover. I’d go behind the cannons, long since filled with concrete, and pretend I was firing them.
The other one I remember was a nature trail, as far as I know nothing of historical note occurred here. But this was the place that I almost disappeared. This park had 2 trails. One was an upper trail with lots of trees overlooking the lower trail. And the lower trail ran parallel to a small creek.
We visited this park many times without incident. However that all changed. One day my grandfather and I visited while he was walking his dog. I asked if I can go play in the stream. At the time I thought he said yes I can go play in the water. So that is what I did.
I ran around I splashed in the water. All while I thought my grandfather watched on from the higher path. After a few moments I had my fill then I left to rejoin my grandfather on the high path.
As I went to join the person who was watching me I got grabbed. I was surprised to find the person who grabbed me was in fact my grandfather. He was furious with me. He told me that he had said no to my request to splash in the water. And rightfully so, why would he let me get wet and muddy? But the strange part, as it turned out my grandfather had spent hours searching for me.
To this day I have unanswered questions. How was it that hours of time passed while to me it was only a few minutes? How was it that I disappeared; I wasn’t hiding or being quiet? And who was the man who looked like my grandad watching over me while I was in the water?
The story of Missing 411 starts with David Paulides is a retired police officer. He wrote two books related to Bigfoot. One day he was approached by an off duty park ranger. The ranger wanted to blow the whistle on some bizarre disappearances. David promised he would investigate the case, the result was a six book series called Missing 411.
I looked through some of the stories of people who were found and witnesses posted online. Some of the stories are really bizarre In this post I’ll be sharing some highlights I found.
One of the stories that stood out for me was the tale of a John Doe. John Doe was a three year old boy who was camping with his family near Mount Shasta on October 2010. He was taken to a cave by a person who looked like his grandmother. He reported seeing a bright light at the entrance of this cave. John Doe reported that this cave was full of “dusty guns.”
The young boy discovered that this person was not actually his grandmother. He noted seeing a light coming from her head. He said that she and the other people who were in the cave were acting and moving like robots. The robotic grandmother told John Doe that he was from outer space. And she was frustrated by John Doe when he would not defecate on a piece of sticky paper. Later he was taken to a field and told to wait for help.
And the story is stranger still. The boy’s grandmother reported being attacked near the Mount Shasta area. She was taken in her sleep, removed from her tent and sleeping bag. She woke up in the dirt feeling an intense pain in her back. She was left with two puncture marks. She remembered seeing red eyes peering at her.
This story resonated with me given my own experience and its good that John Doe was found. Thousands of people go missing a year but only a handful return.
The story of Alfred Beilhartz disappeared without a trace despite being only feet away from his family. He left no footprints or a trace of any kind. Search dogs were confused by the scent. They laid down and would go no further. This is a common element of these stories. Search dogs will be visibly distrubed, whimpering with their tails tucked, and pace in circles or just lay down.
He was spotted minutes later after the disappearance by a group of hikers in a dangerous and hard to reach out cropping called the Devil’s Nest six miles away. He was dazed and upset. Alfred was jerked way by an unseen force. It took well equipped specialists to reach the Devil’s Nest. When they got there, Alfred wasn’t there. Alfred Beilhartz was never seen again.
Lillian Carney had a strange story to tell. She was picking berries when she disappeared. Lillian was missing for forty-eight hours, she said the sun shined the whole time. The weather was cloudy when she went missing. There were no sources of artificial light in the area she vanished from.
One of the discoveries David made was that a list of the currently missing in our national parks does not exist. The federal government does not keep a database to track missing persons. And no one knows how many people are currently missing.
Who are the people that mimic family members? What are their motives? How do some of the taken clear miles of distance in mere minutes? What is causing the time fluxuations and the experiences of lost time?
