Castlevania makes it's triumphant return to Netflix! The creators of this show continue to impress me with how well they know the lore and how well they can sneak references to other games and characters. This episode maintains the high quality of presentation that the first season established. While no mention of Grant was made in this episode I was surprised to see another character make his appearance that I was not expecting. Though this character was the main "hero" from a less than stellar entry into the series he does seem to be more interesting this time around since they gave him some character development.
Season two actually starts up with a bit of a flash back. We are in Wallachia, the setting is the home/labortory of Lisa Tepes (pronounced Tep ish) wife of Vlad Tepes aka Dracula (Son of the Dragon). She is sitting with an elderly woman diagnosing her illness and using the medical science she learned from Dracula's library. She gives her medicine and escorts the elderly woman out only to be met on her door step by the "emissary of the Archbishop of Targoviste", a familiar face from season 1... Him and his men invade her house searching for something; her lab! They find it and burn her home down along with her knowledge.
Flash forward to the present and a very displeased Dracula. A large room, dark lit by torches filled with vampires and the like. Dracula calls forth two men to lead his forces, two human men. The main hero of "Castlevania: Curse of Darkness" Hector and a blackwashed version of Issac! Muh duhversity I guess; even better is that he's a former slave so yeah enjoy that I suppose... Anyway, after being promoted to Dracula's generals they encounter some questions from the vampires to which Hector promptly shuts them down.
Back to the human world they are bush picking up the pieces from their broken home and removing the dead. Trevor and Sypha attempt to have a tender moment but Trevor being a bit of an insensitive jerk leaves Sypha in a bit of a huff. Adrian Tepes makes his first appearence and tells a brief story about his mother and father and why he adopted the name "Alucard". We then return to Dracula's castle and Hector performing his main job of "Devil forge master" (Hector's job is basically to create all the monsters that Dracula uses in his armies). Dracula uses an oddly familiar orb like object to teleport his castle (the titular Castlevania) thus ending the episode.
This episode was not an action based episode. In fact there was virtually none in it at all. What it was is an expertly crafted tale setting up the rest of the season. They accomplished that amazingly well. Even though his game was subpar Hector became a welcome addition to the cast and was actually interesting this time around. I'm looking forward to the next episode as this was a solid 8/10 experience!
