The Cuban drug called 'Interferon Alpha 2B' appears to be effective in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Cuban drug 'Recombinant Natural Interferon Alpha 2B', marketed under the name 'Heberon® Alfa R', has been shown to be an effective drug against COVID-19. So far, more than 1,500 patients in China have been effectively cured of the coronavirus. It is also one of the 30 drugs selected by the Chinese National Health Commission to Combat COVID-19.
The drug is manufactured in China and was first developed in 1986 by Cuban doctor Luis Herrera and a team from the Center for Gene and Biotechnology (CIGB).
How does it work?
The drug has been used for 40 years to treat HIV-AIDS, hepatitis B and C, shingles, dengue and various types of cancer. Interferon Alpha 2B increases the natural production of interferon in the human body and strengthens the patient's immune system. This is the same way that, according to Peoples Dispatch, it helps treat coronavirus disease. It was also used to combat the MERS-CoV epidemic three years ago.
The virus multiplies in the cells by reducing the levels of interferon that are naturally produced in human cells. The drug can create conditions to limit the replication of the virus through another pathway that increases the amount of interferon, explains Dr. Herrera in an interview with teleSUR. "The world faces the challenge of understanding that health is not a commodity but a fundamental right," said Herrera.
As an agreement between two socialist countries in the field of biotechnology, the drug was developed in Cuba and manufactured in China by Changchun Heber Biological technology in the province of Jilin.

Worldwide requests for Cuban aid
Several Latin American, Caribbean, and European countries have requested the drug from Cuba, as well as professionals to help fight COVID-19. Cuba sent stocks of Interferon Alpha 2B and a team of doctors to Italy to work with Chinese experts to contain the outbreak.
Chinese and Cuban doctors arrived in Italy on March 14 with 31 tons of medical supplies from China and medicines from Cuba.
"We have more doctors abroad than practically any other country in the world, not because we export something, but simply because we want to participate in building a world with better health and living conditions," explained Dr. Herrera.
“We started importing Interferon 2b, a Cuban drug that is used successfully in China and Spain. This is for high-risk infected people, ”said Mayor of Recoleta in Chile, Daniel Jadue, on March 16 on Twitter.
Part of the Cuban health mission
After the revolution led by Fidel Castro, Cuba founded a humanitarian medical mission 55 years ago. The country has delivered almost free health services in more than 160 countries worldwide, the report said.
Herrera also emphasized that Cuba, along with other nations, wanted to participate in the solidarity movement, "just as other countries showed solidarity with Cuba, especially with Latin American and African countries".
