(Start at the beginning)

“Stay here and assist Ms.Boot. I’m going to go see how things fare. Bolt the door behind me and don’t open it for anyone except me or your brothers, you got that?”

Julia watched as Mathias wrapped himself in a heavy pelt and turned to leave. She’d found the man to have a fearful presence, hard and wizened with age, an authority few could contend with. Seeing him with his daughters showed how such a giant could also be gentle, and the man gave his concerned daughters a firm squeeze as if to prove it.

The sound of distant shouting spoke to whatever drama was unfolding outside but Julia’s role was to keep her eyes on Kass. Dolev had lagged behind to help bind the girl to her chair and ever since, Julia had noticed a shift in the younger girls mood- coupled with an eagerness to resist.

“Have you got this?” Dolev finished a knot that bound one of Kass’ ankles to the leg of her chair.

“Bear! Are you coming?” Mathias prompted from outside the door.

Dolev looked over and stood up, exchanging one final glance with Julia who was still catching up with her answer- “It’s ok, go.” She nodded toward the door.

As Dolev went on her way, Kass began growling and fighting at her binds. With one leg tied to the chair and her hands behind her back, her struggles were limited. However the leg Julia was tying was not yet finished, and Kass managed to kick the bind free.

“Hey!”

The sudden surge in movement knocked the blonde Chronocoler back, and Kass took the opportunity to kick the table with her free leg, sending it sliding across the room. It screeched along the floorboards, the contents clattering over its sides.

Dolev reeled around at the door, turning to see the commotion as Mathias cursed with impatience behind her.

“Shit.” Dolev said under her breath. “Kass, settle down!” She yelled. “Julia!”

“Get in there and sort her out.” Mathias said in stern warning and started to close the door. He looked to his eldest daughter, caught up in the commotion. “Bolt the door. No one but me or your brothers.” He reiterated and the door closed.

As Julia struggled to get up off her ass, Kass took the liberty to stumble clumsily on her one good appendage. The motion was awkward, and she squawked with rage, hopping and stumbling backward across the room. She stumbled, connecting with the wall and splintering the chair, finding herself toppled in a mess of wood and loose bindings.

Dolev gave chase as Julia scrambled to her feet.

“Should we help?” The elder sister asked with the younger hiding behind.

“Stay back!” Dolev thrust out her hand, taking charge of the situation.

Julia fell into lock step with Dolev, the two approaching cautiously as Kass thrashed herself free. She locked her eyes on them, watching their every movement, growling threateningly. For all her resistance, Julia had not seen Kass act quite so savagely. Just like when they rode through the abandoned settlement, something seemed to have come over the girl. She did not appear to be acting wholly as herself.

“She’s turned feral,” Julia whispered.

Dolev held out her hands in a big non-threatening gesture. “Kass, you need to calm down, we don’t want to hurt you, so don’t make us.”

Kass bared her teeth and pushed herself into the wall, kicking at the debris of the chair and sending pieces skittering across the floor. She scrambled up with her hands behind her back, a piece of wood in her hands, and a shaft of wood still bound around one leg. “I’ll kill you!” She roared and rushed forward.

Kass barreled into Dolev who caught her in a hug, the two toppling backward. They went down hard with the wind being knocked from Dolev’s lungs. She coughed, winded, but felt to concerned as Kass mashing teeth biting at her face to pay it much mind.

Julia fell in from above, reaching for Kass’ arms but coming up with a handful of hair as well. It didn't feel right being so rough but then, despite her best assumptions, nothing had been right about this girl since she’d come to know her. Julia had maintained her doubts but seeing her now, wild eyed and feral like some animal, beyond the reach of words, it was difficult to deny she had a problem.

Kass screamed as Julia pulled her off Dolev. The feral maiden flipped to her back and kicked Julia in the groin. A low grunting sound emanate from the blondes throat and she stumbled backward toward the fireplace. She had the moment to reflect on how undignified the sound she’d made was before- instinctively- she put out a hand to brace herself from an impact. She realise to late she’d planted her hand on the casting of the fireplace. Reflectively she drew away, crying out in pain, and this time without any internalization on how she must have sounded.

Kass continued to spin on the hardwood floor, using her legs to move herself around. Dolev had rolled away, finding some distance to right herself. Kass screamed again, forcing her hands beneath her while drawing her legs into the air. The binds tore at her wrists, straining for slack as she brought her arms to her front. She picked up what remained of the seat off the floor and came up looking for a quarrel.

Dolev was up on her feet, a chair leg brandished in her own hand. The two exchanged a brief glance before Kass surged forward once more. She drew back her club and swung wildly with a scream but Dolev dashed backward allowing the momentum to throw Kass into her way. Dolev brought the chair leg down hard on the young girls head. She collapsed under the blow, falling feebly to the floor.

Dolev wasted no time, grabbing the discarded length of rope and working quickly on a crude hogtie. Julia made her way over, clasping at her burnt hand.

“Sorry, she caught me by surprise,” She looked at her palm, red, blistered, and searing with pain.

“This wasn't your fault.” Dolev answered. She looked up, seeing Julia’s plight, and grabbed her by the wrist to see. “Water. Girls, see to this, quickly.” The sisters, who’d drawn themselves into the far corner of the room, moved into action. Dolev looked back to Julia who was beginning to feel woozy, and in that suggestive tone that seemed capable of moving mountains said, “You should sit down.”

Julia happened to agree.
