The detachment of the celebrity elite is as much self inflicted as it is systemic
Now I'm not normally one to indulge in the celebrity world, I find the "fame at all costs even my own dignity " a damning indictment on contemporary society. I usually judge a famous persons value the way I would anyone else- how good they are at their job. One significant difference between them and Joe public would be, apartfrom stacks of money, their inability to know what's going on in the real world.
Partly this is due to the bubble of security guards, elitist living and indulgence encouraged by the head honchos of the fame world. And this alone would make it difficult to have a pint and discussion over general or even local current affairs. It can however be limited by the extent of their ego and strength of character, 2 obvious examples are ego maniac Harvey Weinstein and cow down to the majority meryl streep (also, fittingly, enablers of the weinstein types). There are role models at other end of the scale whom, may need refreshing on the ways of the real world, would have the humility to "get it" after a pint or two. See Mel Gibson and James Woods. Brave enough to call a spade a spade despite what lefty diatribe is trending and seemingly down to earth.
Now why would I care about extending an olive branch and opening the horizons to the haves of Hollywood to us have-nots?
The kindness of my heart? The desire to see shows that are based SOMEWHERE in the universe of reality these days? Not entirely. I deem the more reasonable of celebs' opinions just as valuable as the demented ones. I wouldn't ask a plumber, cowboy or not, what his thoughts on current fiscal policy were.
But the reason I am reaching out to the stars is that we do have one shared experience. Amidst all the contrasts of luxury versus "roof over me ead food in me belly" we share the necessity for free speech. Without it the genius of the near the knuckle comedian and the joker at work that gets you through the rough shift, alike wouldn't exist. And this isn't a new problem. The former figures are of a fast dying breed.
Unlike issues that don't normally touch the elites. And the which brands advert will photoshop more of my gut out problems that don't reach normies, free speech touches all of us.
Free speech is about being natural and enjoying the freedoms veterans won us in the battlefield. We don't have to suit up and risk our lives the way they did...though the ego elites, politicians and enablers are conflating wrong think expressed in any way with violence. And if we all continue to kick the can down the road then we will be full blown 1984, council state and walk of fame alike. Anything said should NEVER be responded to with violence.
Let's stick with spectrums for consistency. At one end it allows us to laugh and see the bright side in otherwise horrible things. At the other it allows us to see some ugly truths in people we thought were okay...but surely even there's some good in this extreme too if it allows us to see this BEFORE we elect them into government. 100% unlimited free speech is what we need.
I'm reaching out to the play it safe, enabler type in Hollywood. The weinstein types have odious pasts that seem to be using virtue signalling to their elite friends as a smokescreen as much as to big themselves up.
To the enablers; in regards to the remaining hurdle, now we've established the truth will set you free (and humanize you); censorship.
All that censorship does is attract curiosity and play to that human trait of it being heightened when we know that we aren't allowed to see something.
At one extreme of censorship ie. None, we have vile things being said occasionally because by and large I believe people are good. At the other, full 1984 surveillance society end, we live in restricted conformity and inability to be creative for most. And for the few geniunely evil people, they just get better at putting out their rhetoric in secret with restrictions.
Gibson, Woods, Davidson, Carr, you've all either felt restrictions that us normies have been feeling for years now, or had to toe that line/appease to save face. You might know the intricacies of performing and entertaining but take it from us Joe publics, who are now scholars on the value of free speech; stand up for it. Now.
