Starfighters

In the Starshatter universe these crafts are labeled SSF, or space superiority fighters.

The design concept behind this abbreviation is simple. You need well armed and armored fightercraft which can ensure their pilot’s survivability and are cheap enough to produce in massive numbers. Do not think SSFs are akin to TIE fighters; the only thing in common is the mass production part.

SSFs vary in size, but most are around twenty meters long and six meters wide. The golden galactic standard dictates that, for a starfighter to fit in this category, it has to be equipped with at least two weapon mounts, have medium armor protection, and short-range FTL capabilities.

Strategically, the SSF assume the role of main screen ship for the fleet. Their job is to deal with other similar craft, to intercept bombers, and even shoot down torpedoes. If their commanders require it, SSFs could be assigned on strike mission duty, and double as light bombers. Realistically they can only deal with small warships since their low yield armaments would be insufficient to damage larger, better-armored vessels.

“Spaceborn fighters need not be aerodynamic, nor do they require wings.”

Starfighter designs used by the Terran Minarchy are numerous to say the least.

CN units use heavily modified versions based on the best models available. Colonists are known to jury-rig gun pods and missiles to complement their craft’s weaponry. Since a squadron of fighters is the very first spaceborn unit a colony can muster, all of their pilots are veterans.

Having successfully fought off multiple pirate and slaver raids, the colonists can go toe to toe even against the aces of local Star states. Terran starfighters are always better designed and manufactured since their space warfare doctrine dictates that starfighters are a strategic asset.

As such, all Terran fighter craft have superior internal systems, or at the very least one which gives them a definite edge in the fight. Each pilot is allowed to improve upon the design of his or her starfighter. Therefore additional jury-rigged weapons, finely tuned engines or other features, like reinforced armor-plating are often mounted on their vessels.

“A pilot’s craft does not end with them sitting behind their starfighter’s controls.”

Terrans equip their starfighters with the best form of protection available, which includes energy shields and reactive armor-plating. More often than not, these are manufactured from battlefield salvage or looted from shot down enemy fighters.

Colonial starfighter squadrons form large groups and are oftentimes more numerous than their enemy. Their jerry-rigged machines had often switched hands between multiple pilots and are considered prized family heirlooms. Each painted with elaborate, strikingly beautiful murals, depicting victories of old and equipped with handcrafted, superior internal systems. Any repairs or Universe forbid, replacements, are facilitated by the use of battlefield salvage.

The proper use of starfighters either as a screen for your capital ships or attack/raiding force can often tip the balance of large fleet engagements. Well planned surgical strikes can force carriers to retreat, therefore denying the enemy control of the battlefield and the much-valued salvage.

“Rejoice Terrans, for we shall use the wrecks of our enemy to repair, rebuild and upgrade! And when they to invade us again, our starfighters shall descend upon them more numerous than the stars themselves!”
