Welcome, everyone, to another chapter of My Gaming Journey: The Temple of Elemental Evil. In the last chapter, Anya Kerros related the tale of the events that brought them to the village of Hommlet, and some subsequent adventures hat followed, all while indicating her discomfort for doing anything for the Church of ST. Cuthbert of the Cudgel, one of the Gods of the world of Greyhawk. Noe the action shits to the Cleric of Pelor, Karlan Sunseeker and his P.O.V. Get ready as the next Journal Entry of The Temple of Elemental Evil continues.

Now with that being said on with the story!
My name is Karlan Sunseeker, Priest of the blessed God of the sun, Pelor. Through his righteous light I bring strength and healing to my party and the masses. When I first met Jerrod Northstar, I had just received my confirmation as a Ceric. Though we may disagree on some things the philosophical discussion were always stimulating. The addition of Anya Kerros, Viera Whitemane, and Garvin Moonstar has brought together a very interesting little group of adventurers. Now we find ourselves in the Village of Hommlet and we find ourselves taking on little quests in order to strengthen ourselves for the battle at the Moathouse we know will come!
Upon awakening we had breakfast in the common room and then set out to our task of making this town better, even as we improve ourselves. We started off by fulfilling St. Cuthbert Priest Calmert’s quest. We found the Brewmaster’s assistant Cavanaugh. Viera talked with him. The poor lad was absolutely horrified because he didn’t have the money for his dues. It seems the Brewmaster doesn’t pay all that much…and the boy does have a penchant for not being the most fiscally responsible young man. Still We felt sorry for the boy and decided to pay off his debt. It cost us a couple gold pieces but it allowed Cavanaugh to keep his job, it allowed Calmert to collect the dues owed. Calmert was none the wiser.
Jerrod wasn’t too happy about it. But sometimes you have to go outside of the law in order to do the good. Pelor often says as much in the book of the Sun, his sacred text.
Next we fulfilled Myella’s quest by going to the Miller name of Mytch. We explained that the church needed some grain for flour. But he refused because, being of the old Faith of Oaerth, he didn’t want to insult Jaroo of the druids. Ah the inevitable conflict when two differing religions come together in one place. One of the sad truths even on Greyhawk. Going to Jaroo we talked with the druid about this we decided that perhaps if he donated grain to both groups it would ensure a balance of things.
From the looks of Mytch’s mill he definitely had more than enough grain that the sacrifice would be a small thing. Jaroo was more than happy to go along with it. We returned to Mytch and explained things to him. Pointing out that the old faith demands balance in everything he agreed to give to both religions sects. And so that problem was solved. Praise Pelor and Heironeous that Jerrod has excellent diplomacy.
Next we chatted with Mytch’s apprentice Erliter. The young man was conflicted because he’d secretly been attending St. Cuthbert’s services and had decided to convert. He was a little wary because he wasn’t sure what Mytch would think. Once again Jerrod’s diplomacy came through as he spoke with Mytch and got him to agree to allowing Erliter to convert. Diplomacy and reason win the day again.
Next up we had to do a bit of skullduggery. Viera had a gut hunch and did something Jerrod…didn’t exactly approve of. She swiped the scrolls from the shelf of Terjon.
Jerrod didn’t like it but after Garvin used read Magic and Identify on the scrolls, we found out their uses and saved them up. We then went to the home of the leatherworker in Hommlet. Jakk Borton, the leatherworker made it clear he was not interested in converting to ST. Cuthbert unless we could perform a miracle on his brother who had suffered a massive head injury and was mentally retarded because of it. Yes, likely some massive head trauma. Praise, Pelor, Heironeous, and St. Cuthbert we had that scroll of heal with us.
This was where I came in. Using my divine power, I cast the heal spell on Bing. The effect was instant, Bing’s cognizance returned and he looked better than he had in years. Heal spells are quite powerful. With that we went to Jakk and he was amazed, and was more than happy to convert to St. Cuthbert. We returned to Terjon tot ell him the news. The priest was quite happy to count Jakk Borton among his flock. He agreed to reduce the rate of services he gives for us.
By this time our skills had improved some where we were ready for the next level. We decided to take a chance and try our luck with Emirdy Meadows. Needless to say, the place proved to be a place of great blasphemy.
The Meadows was full of undead monsters. We fought five skeletons some of whom had crossbow bolts, and one even had a heavy crossbow which we gave to Viera. We took them down but we got a little scratched up. Next we searched the meadow. We saw a Hill Giant and a bear in the distance and decided that if we ever come back here it’ll be when we’re much more powerful. We found the rainbow rock Terjon mentioned…and ended up in a bit of a spot. We fought against a zombie two Gnoll skeletons,
and several regular skeletons. But int the end we triumphed. We found a small cache of treasure, but among them was strange creature statue. Garvin took it but I and Jerrod wanted nothing to do with it. Something about that statue gives us both the creeps. We headed back to Hommlet and turned Terjon’s pendant back over to him. The canon was immensely relieved to see his pendant back.
When we had breakfast at the Inn that morning, we had heard word that a fellow name of Holton was having some difficulty. As it turned up the difficulty came in the form of his daughter Fruella a rather shrewish woman who was very picky and very foul-tempered. All he wanted to do was marry her off for some peace and quiet. Jerrod fulfilled his wish and decided to marry her. However, as a result Fruella is now part of the group.
As it turned up, she was not without some skill, she’s actually a fighter who’s good with the sling and battle axe. Fruella may be shrewish now, but if there’s one thing the War Clerics at the Church where I learned my skill taught it’s this. Entitlement, shrewishness, and arrogance all end dying horribly when the faced with the cruel truths of Greyhawk, either that or the person perishes. Praise Pelor that I paid attention to that lesson, I will pray to Pelor and Heironeous that Fruella learns this lesson quickly so that she may survive.
Next, the rumor mill at the Welcome Wench came in handy again. Visiting the local carpenter, we had a talk with his assistant.
Jerrod’s Diplomacy revealed that the Carpenter’s Assistant was in love with a local lass named Althea. The problem is He’s St. Cuthbert and Althea of the old Faith. As I have said the inevitable conflict when two religions clash. We decided to take a look into it for the sake of the Carpenter and his assistant. Marek, the Carpenter’s Brother and assistant was grateful for us doing this. We returned to Jaroo the Druid’s treehouse and explained things to him.
He answered that he would be more than happy to convert Marek to the Old Faith if Terjon agreed. Next we had to explain things to terjon. Needless to say, the High Priest of the St. Cuthbert Church was not pleased. However, we had to point out all the people we had brought over to his church. Reluctantly he agreed to it. As much respect as Pelor has for St. Cuthbert sometimes his followers can be a bit too stuffy and by the book for their own good.
We immediately went back to Jaroo and told him the news. I think that put a smile on the Druid’s face as he said he would begin making preparations for the conversion. We then told Marek and the Carpenter the good news. Marek and his brother were absolutely elated. Sometimes in order to achieve the good balance must be maintained. Pelor says as much in the book of the Sun Chapter 7 Verse 4.
The next task, and our final task of the day was a joy to undertake. This was an issue of the heart. Two of the local farmers were feuding over a barn that they shared. But according the rumor mill the problems ran deeper with Fillken. Ironically Fillken is the father of Althea, whom Marek means to marry. We met with Fillken’s sister-in-law, Gwyneth, apparently Fillken and his brother have been fighting because ever since poor Fillken’s wife passed he’s been throwing himself into his work. I have seen this sort of thing before. But I also know one cannot mourn one’s lost spouse forever. As it turned up Gwyneth had a plan. That plan involved a woman near Fillken’s age name of Mathilde, who was a widow herself.
When we went to the lady in question as it turned up, she has aged well, all that exercise and outdoors have kept her in good shape. It seems she has feelings for Fillken as well. She also explained she wanted to have the local carpenter build a barn for Fillken so he and his brother would stop fighting. This is an idea that we agreed was absolutely brilliant, and would bring a lot of peace to Hommlet. A wise man knows that women conspire in an effort to win the heart of a man, every attempt should be made to see that plan is brought to fruition.
We explained tot eh Carpenter what Mathilde had in mind and he made it clear if she was willing to pay for it, and the woman is fairly well off herself, then there would be no problem he’d put it at the top of his to do list.
We then talked to Fillken himself and even met his eldest daughter Althea though there was another young lady in the room around my age who looked intriguing. We talked to Fillken…and we learned that he was interested in Mathilde but the problem was he didn’t want to disrespect them memory of his wife.
For that we went to Jaroo and consulted with him. AS it turns up a Year of mourning is all that is needed for a member of the old Faith, in fact afterwards getting back out there is encouraged. With this wonderful news we went to Fillken and explained the situation to him. On hearing the news, it looked as if the weight of the world was taken off the man’s shoulders. He happily agreed to invite Mathilde over for dinner. And the look of joy and gratitude on his face was all that was needed. However, I have a feeling that before we head to the Moathouse we’ll be talking to him again.
We headed back to the Inn to the Welcome Wench to get some rest. I believe our time in Hommlet will be ending very soon. Next up will be the Moathouse and that, I and the others believed, was where the real adventure would begin. I only hoped that Jerrod’s new wife could handle the shock, of reality. May Pelor and Heironeous keep us safe.
