In the political arena, they are on different sides - Anders Ågren (M), Thomas Hartman (S), Robert Winroth (MP) and several other heavy names in Umea politics. But through the Freemasons they are brothers and behind the scenes, the brothers help each other politically, according to other highly regarded politicians.
Several of the heaviest and most influential politicians in Umeå and in Västerbotten are members of the Freemasons. Many of the politicians also have high positions in Freemasonry, they are not only ordinary members at low level but have high degrees and have come a long way in the organization.
- Anders Ågren, the moderates group leader in Umeå has the highest official degree in the Freemasons - grade ten.
- Thomas Hartman, social democrat and communications director at Region Västerbotten, has a grade nine.
- Edward Riedl, MP for the Moderates, has a grade eight.
- Nicklas Sandström, Opposition County Council for the Moderates, has a grade eight.
- Robert Winroth, county councilor for the Environment Party, has degree six.
Several other politicians with whom VK has been in contact say that the ties between the Freemason brothers are evident in the policy. A highly regarded politician with whom the VK has spoken, who are not Freemasons themselves, is strongly critical of the politicians' involvement in the Freemasons.
- Politicians' membership in Freemasonry is unhealthy. There is something putty between those who are Freemasons, whether they are moderates or Social Democrats. They care about each other, give each other benefits. And this goes through the work in Region Västerbotten, the county council and Umeå municipality, says the politician who wants to be anonymous.
Another politician, Center Party Sven-Olov Edvinsson, says that Freemasonry is noticeable in how political matters can turn up in unexpected ways.
- It is noticed from time to time that questions wander in a way that does not have an explanation in the political walk, he says.
More politicians than Ågren, Hartman, Riedl and Winroth are members of Freemasonry. In the Freemasons in Umeå, there are moderates, social democrats and environmental parties alongside politicians from the Sweden Democrats, the Center Party and the Liberals. Another well-known name is former county councilor Levi Bergström (S). High officials and men with influence in other arenas are also part of the Freemasons.
The rituals have different elements depending on the degree. In one ritual, the brother lies in a coffin and undergoes a ritual burial, in another the pledges are signed that other Freemason brothers are even their most trusted friends "with whom I associate an unceasing and eternal covenant this day."
In a ceremony, the brother who is about to get a ribbon tied around his neck and hears: "On the basis of your promised promises, I bind you with this golden association band so that after completing the test you may become a link in our insoluble bread chain".

About the loyalty ties created within the Freemasons, he says:
- Rituals strengthen community ties, creating bonds that can be stronger than laws and regulations. The members become more like a family. And just like between relatives, the bond between people can mean that they end up in conflict situations, says Håkan Järvå.
